Bio

“Once the conditions of the learning experience have been organized, the teacher ignites the art of drawing in his or her students and then guides them into more and more profound states of realization.” -Anthony Ryder

At the League he met Ted Seth Jacobs, who became his teacher and mentor. In this 5-day figure drawing workshop, Class time will be divided between lectures, demonstrations and drawing from the model. Mr. Ryder will demonstrate how to capture the gestural curve of a pose while maintaining an accurate drawing through the process of drawing a basic envelope, blocking in the form, contour drawing, and shading. Students will take figure drawings to various stages of completion as they learn about the structure of the body. Each student’s drawing receives individual attention at his or her drawing board or easel.

Portrait Painting in Oil

During this two-week painting workshop, students complete one portrait, following along as Mr. Ryder demonstrates each step of the painting process with two-hour demonstrations each morning and gives individual critiques for the rest of each day. The process begins with a small color study, called a “poster study”. Then a careful drawing is done in charcoal directly on the canvas. The drawing is inked in with paint, and is followed with a precise, full-color underpainting wash-in. After the underpainting is complete, the final opaque layer of paint is applied.
