Bio
Judith B. Carducci, PSA, has been recognized as one of today’s best portraitists. Her work has been honored with national and international awards and has been shown in such venues as The National Arts Club and the Salmagundi Club in New York City, The Bennington Center for the Arts, the Cahoon Museum of American Art, and the Butler Institute of American Art. Paintings by Carducci have been featured in International Artist magazine, Pastel Artist International, American Artist magazine, The Pastel Journal, The Artist’s Magazine, and the books, Best of Portrait Painting (North Light Books) and Portrait Highlights (American Artist). She is one of two Americans featured in the book Paint! Portrait and Figure by the Swiss publisher RotoVision, and her painting, “Xanadu,” was selected as one of the “best of the best” by the former curator of the Smithsonian Institution’s Renwick Gallery for the art book Beautiful Things (Guild). Her work is in collections in the United States, Israel, and Europe. She is listed in Who’s Who in America; Outstanding People of the 20th [& 21st] Century, International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England; is represented by Portrait Brokers, Inc., and Portraits South; is a member of Phi Beta Kappa; and gives workshops on pastel and portraiture, by invitation.

Still Life in Pastel
Judy Carducci’s five day pastel workshop will include lecture and demonstration each morning, followed by a student painting sessions with a critique at each student’s individual easel .in the afternoon. Judy will speak on relevant topics over the duration of the workshop. Topics of discussion will include the history of pastel and modern materials, types of pastels and work surfaces. Judy will demonstrate various strokes and how to apply them. She will discuss pastel as a drawing and a painting medium. Other topics include: rendering a 3 dimensional object on a 2 dimensional surface; controlling color; technical skills; the care, framing and shipping of pastel paintings; and how to make your painting a work of art.
Pastel Portraiture from Life
Judy Carducci’s class, Pastel Portraiture from life will cover a variety of topics over the five day duration of the class. The basic outline of the class will be to cover certain topics on each of the five days. The first day of class will cover the history of pastel, the different strokes one can use with a pastel, and the Carducci Approach. Day two will cover the necessity of working from life, the 2 essential qualities of portraits, the importance of likeness, and the necessity of the portrait to have an intrinsic value as a work of art. On day three, Judy will cover anatomy, values as the structural foundation, and avoiding common errors. Day four will cover such issues as posing, clothing, and lighting in relation to the client. Day 5 will stress color and any unaddressed questions that the students may have.
