Bio
Lynne Riding received her art foundation from Hereford College of Art, UK, her BA from Manchester College of Art & Design, UK, and her MFA from The San Francisco Art Institute, CA.
Lynne has taught at college level for many years, both in the UK and the US. The move to the US and to Charleston, South Carolina came fifteen years ago. She currently holds a position as professor of studio art at the College of Charleston. During the summer of 2007, she received best in show from the South Carolina Conservation League, Vanishing Places. Exhibitions include: “30th Parallel- A Convergence of Contemporary Painting”, JMOMA; “Recent Work”, Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, College of Charleston, SC; “Terra Incognita”, the Diego Rivera Gallery, San Francisco, CA; “Trizec-13th Annual”, Charlotte, SC; and “Places and Spaces:Landscape and Genre Spaces in the South”, the Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, SC. She is represented by Chiascuro Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Inroads into Drawing- Learning to Draw with Confidence
This class will provide a strong foundation on which to build, for the student wishing to develop drawing further, or move into painting. In addition to the wonderful qualities of drawing for it’s own sake, drawing is a tool which aids the process to achieving an end in other disciplines, such as sculpture, painting and all areas of design. The focus of this course will be on the students’ development of a confidence and accuracy in drawing and the ability to develop the individual mark. Students will work in the studio through a series of projects. Issues concerning line, tone, scale, spatial issues, composition and expressive mark-making will be covered in this class. Discussions with visual reference will take place concerning varying styles and methods of drawing from the historical to the contemporary. Various mediums will be used such as charcoal, ink, conte and graphite.
Painting in Oils- For the Beginner
This class will build confidence in dealing with painterly issues, such as basic mixing, the quality of paint application and the various methods of painting. Glazing, wet into wet, dry brush, and palette knife techniques will be among the issues covered. The student will learn to make decisions regarding tonal values and to understand the meaning and language of the various colors. In addition, the effect of colors when placed in varying proportions to one another will be studied by means of a series of color exercises, such as the effects of using complementary, split complementary, and analogous color. The use of various supports will be discussed, together with the methods of preparation of these surfaces for painting.
