Ryan Wurmser
Bio
Ryan Wurmser was born Los Angeles, California in 1973. While in high school he attended the Art Center College of Design on a Merit Scholarship that was later extended upon his graduation. To advance his fine art studies he chose the rigors of discipline and tradition offered at the renowned California Art Institute in Westlake Village. After only two years of serious full-time study, Wurmser began teaching at the small atelier, and now conducts various workshops in painting and drawing nationwide. Wurmser’s ability to reconcile his enthusiasm of naturalism with expressive realism is evident in his representational images. The core influence related to his technique has grown from his appreciation and study of past masters, especially the Dutch masters during the 17th century and the Naturalist painters during the turn of the 19th century. Through his subtle use of line, tone and color, Wurmser infuses his subjects with expressive meaning by transforming everyday subject matter into something that is emotionally poignant. In addition to solo exhibitions, Wurmser’s work has appeared in several group exhibitions throughout the United States including the prestigious Salon d’ Arts at the Colorado History Museum in Denver and “The Next Generation of Realists” Exhibition at the Forbes Gallery in New York City. He received the Grand Prize at the “Artists for the New Century” Exhibit (2006) hosted by the Bennington Center for the Arts in Vermont. Last year Wurmser’s painting “Wayfarer’s Retreat” was honored with the Gold Medal for Best Painting at the California Art Club’s 95th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition. He was also awarded Southwest Art’s Award of Artistic Merit for the same painting. His work has been featured in various publications including Art Talk, American Artist, The Artist’s Magazine, Southwest Art, and Fine Art Connoisseur, among others.
Classes taught by Ryan Wurmser
Plein Air Landscape Painting Workshop I
This class has no available sessions. Please email us if you are interested.
Painting a field study (plein air painting) is an exercise in observing natural phenomena and then organizing a composition based on a visual concept that supports it. The painter attempts to gather as much truth as possible about what aspect of nature he is choosing to emphasize. The artist’s attempt to convey a simple idea has much to do with editing, or selective seeing. In fact, all great visual ideas are rather simple, precisely because so much is edited.
This 3-day workshop will focus on the fundamentals and principles of concept and design in the creation of field studies that can be further developed in the studio as larger easel paintings.
