Yuqi Wang
Bio
Celebrated artist Yuqi Wang trained at the Tianjin Academy in China. He has lectured and exhibited extensively across China, Canada, the UK and America. His work hangs in public collections in China, the U.S. and the collection of the Japanese Royal Family. In 2000, he was awarded the Portrait Society of America Grand Prize. In 2006, he won Second Prize in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery competition for his painting From Red Hook. Mr. Wang says of his work: “What draws me, as an artist, to put brush to canvas is at once both public and private. The world I reveal is a blend of both the ‘Occident’ and the ‘Orient’; my passion for both Classic European portraiture and the Pre-Raphaelite movement is gently kissed by my Chinese heritage. I find the classic styles to be timeless, with a warmth and honesty not offered any more with modern movements.”

Mastering Color and Composition with Oil
This class has no available sessions. Please email us if you are interested.
Yuqi Wang’s Autumn 2007 visit to Santa Fe will be divided into three sessions. Students may choose to take all three sessions, or opt to take only one or two. The first four weeks of the class will be instruction in the fine points of painting the portrait in oil for the intermediate to advanced student. The week of October 15 through 19 will be a class taught en plein air. This landscape class will be a change of pace for the students taking the entire nine weeks, and a golden opportunity for others to study outdoors with one of the finest landscape painters. The last four weeks will be for portrait artists wanting to work alongside a living master.
The portrait segments of the nine weeks will begin with a demonstration that addresses composition and the initial decisions needed to begin a painting. Throughout the rest of the course, Mr. Wang will divide his time between painting from the model alongside students and giving individual critiques. Students will be working on one to three paintings over the duration of the class, and are also encouraged to spend time each day observing the instructor’s painting process and asking questions.
The landscape week will be outside in the surrounds of Santa Fe. For this class students need to bring portable easels.
Yuqi Wang’s painting process is elegant, emphasizing economy of motion and careful observation. Students will first learn how to resolve composition issues such as the balance of negative space. Yuqi will then demonstrate how to lay in the initial underpainting swiftly with loose brushstrokes and clear, vibrant color. As the painting develops, the detail and color subtleties will be refined, using a specific logic for warm and cool colors in the lights, halftones and shadows. Yuqi will explain his approach to color mixing, showing students how to determine whether a color is warm, cool, light or dark in relationship to the other colors in the painting. His palette is organized so that these qualities and their relationships remain clear. For the nine week class in the Fall of 2007, Mr. Wang will be in class for 20 per week and there will be a teaching assistant.
“Yuqi Wang teaches and paints at a technical level of mastery, yet conveys his knowledge in a way that is comprehensible to the beginning painter as well as the advanced.” – Heather McCrea
“The atmosphere of the class was totally supportive of learning, taking risks and validating my unique style as an artist.” – Pati Springmeyer
“Yuqi is a true humanist. He cares deeply for improving each student to the best of their ability. I deeply value this experience that the Andreeva Academy gave me.” – Jo Sherwood
